Glossary of Terms

Advanced Standing
A resident may, with the approval of the program director, petition the specific Education and Evaluating Committee of the specialty college for advanced standing credit towards the completion of his/her current residency program for previous residency training taken in the same specialty area, or a different specialty area in either an approved osteopathic or ACGME training site. Advanced Standing is recorded in months.

Postdoctoral Training Completion and Verification Codes:

Complete

Internships
This is applicable to trainees who have met all requirements for graduation from the internship program (i.e. they have been issued a certificate of completion and can now begin a residency).

Residencies
This is applicable to trainees who have met all requirements for graduation from a residency program and have been deemed “Training Complete” by the Evaluating Committee of the specific AOA Specialty College.   Trainees not having this code on the AOA database are not considered to have “AOA-approved” training.

Verified
This is applicable to all trainees (interns and residents) who have attended a program. This code is does NOT indicate successful completion of the all of the requirements of a program.

Breached
This is applicable to any trainee who signed an AOA-approved contract with the institution, did not obtain release by mutual consent, and refused to attend the program. When a trainee breaches contract with an institution, the AOA will not recognize any postdoctoral training (osteopathic or allopathic) completed for one year from the date of the breach.

Incomplete
This applies in the case when a trainee has attended a program for some amount of time, but the trainee was released from their contract under special circumstances. For example, a trainee may have an illness and may need to take a leave of absence.  The trainee has the ability to return to the program to complete the program if they choose to do so.

No Attendance
This is applicable in the case in which a trainee is released from a contract before the contract start date. In most cases, the trainee has not signed an AOA-approved contract.

Released
This is applicable if a trainee signed a contract, but then received written release by mutual consent, and did not attend the program. In these instances, both the program and the trainee have agreed to dismiss the contract, with no negative repercussions; holding neither side to their contractual obligations.

Terminated
This is applicable only in the case of trainee termination (i.e. firing, dismissal, etc), prior to the end date of the contract. The date of termination should match the contract end date in the trainee’s record.

Transferred
This only applies in the rare cases when a program closes during the training year, and must transfer their trainees to other programs. In these instances, the program that closes marks the trainee as “transferred”.

Unverified
This is applicable if a trainee (intern and resident) may have attended a program. This usually indicates the record is an older, allopathic training record that was not primary source verified. This code does NOT indicate successful completion of the all of the requirements of a program or that that the information has primary-source verified by the AOA.
